Conversations Beyond My Ken

AC: Tell me the story about when you were born.
Me: Once upon a time, in a faraway land, Mommy was born.  It was so far away that it wasn't even in America!  The lady who grew me in her tummy couldn't keep me, so she wrapped me in a blanket and put me where somebody could find me.  And that kind person looked for some people who wanted to be a mommy and a daddy--who was that?
AC: My grandma and granpa!
Me: Yes!  And so I flew on an airplane when I was a tiny baby, and somebody carried me off the airplane in a little pink dress and handed me to Grammy and Pop.  And my grandma and grandpa were there too and everybody was so excited!  And Grammy had on a necklace with white beads and I chewed on them and they took me home to their house.
AC: When I was born, did you want to keep me right away?
Me: Yes, I sure did.  I wanted to keep both of you right away.
AC: And you said, "These babies are so beautiful that I want to keep them!"
Me: Yes, I did say that.  But I would have wanted to keep you even if you weren't beautiful.  But you were beautiful!
AC: Yeah.
Me: And then we brought you home to this house.  Then you had a hard time eating and you got a little sick, so we took you back to the hospital and Mommy stayed with you for a week until you got better.
AC: Did my daddy stay with my little sister?
Me: No, Gillian wasn't born yet, so it was just you and Mommy and Daddy back then.
Gillian: Where am I?
Me: You hadn't grown in my tummy yet.  You were still in heaven.
Gillian: In the dying heaven? Did I die?
Me: No, you didn't die--not like that.  You were there before you were born and came to live with Mommy and Daddy and Sister.
Gillian: Did I eat it all up?
Me: Yes, you ate right away!  You didn't have to go back to the hospital.
